Moving a Washer and Dryer

Relocating your home can be an exciting experience, but moving heavy appliances like a washer and dryer can quickly feel overwhelming. These essential household machines are bulky, heavy, and not designed for easy transport. However, with the right preparation, tools, and technique, moving your washer and dryer can be done safely and without damage.

1. Gather Tools & Supplies

Before starting, make sure you have the following items ready:

  • Appliance dolly (heavy-duty)
  • Moving straps and Moving blankets
  • Transit bolts (Essential for front-loading washers)
  • Adjustable wrench and Packing tape

What Are Transit Bolts?

Transit bolts secure the drum during transportation. They prevent the drum from moving, which helps avoid internal damage. Running a machine at the new home with these bolts still installed can cause serious damage.

2. Prepare the Machines

  • Clean and completely dry both the washer and dryer.
  • Disconnect them from the power supply and shut off water valves.
  • Remove water hoses and drain any remaining water.
  • Secure all cables and hoses to the sides of the machines using packing tape.

3. Secure and Protect

For front-loading washers, install the transit bolts to lock the drum in place. Wrap each appliance with moving blankets to protect against scratches, dents, and impacts. Secure the blankets with moving straps to keep them firmly in place during transit.

⚠️ Safety Warning: Never attempt to move these appliances alone. Always use an appliance dolly and keep the machines upright at all times to protect the internal mechanics.

4. Installation & Test Runs

Once you arrive at your new home and have removed the transit bolts, reconnect your hoses and power. Before regular use, run these test cycles:

Washer Check:

  • Run an empty cycle and check for leaks.
  • Listen for unusual rattling or thumping sounds.
  • Ensure the machine is perfectly leveled using a wrench.

Dryer Check:

  • Test the heating function.
  • Ensure proper airflow and ventilation to avoid overheating.

Leave It to the Professionals

Moving a washer and dryer safely requires experience, strength, and the right equipment. If you’re dealing with high-end appliances or simply want peace of mind, hiring professional movers is the smartest choice.
